Call for Proposals to Celebrate the United Nations International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

The IAU Office for Astronomy Outreach invites proposals of projects relating to the United Nations International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, which will be celebrated on 9 August 2022. This Under One Sky Call for Proposals [1] is run in partnership with Leiden University, and continues the legacy of the IAU 100 celebrations, which took place in 2019 with the theme Under One Sky.

The United Nations International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples will take place during the first year of the United Nations International Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022–2032), which we will enter next year. The Under One Sky Call for Proposals seeks to support projects that use cultural astronomy, astronomy outreach and communication to recognize indigenous knowledge and respect indigenous learning systems with a rights-based approach to indigenous learning.

The call will award grants of up to €2000 to selected projects, and is open to everyone, but with projects led by indigenous communities being favoured. Proposals must be submitted to the IAU OAO via this form by 23:59 (your) local time on 31 December 2021. If you have any issues accessing the form please contact public@oao.iau.org and we will provide an RTF or TXT accessible file. Selected projects will be announced by 28 February 2022.

Notes

[1] This project is possible thanks to the support of Leiden Observatory and the NWO Communication Award 2020.

More information

The IAU is the international astronomical organisation that brings together more than 12 000 active professional astronomers from more than 100 countries worldwide. Its mission is to promote and safeguard astronomy in all its aspects, including research, communication, education and development, through international cooperation. The IAU also serves as the internationally recognised authority for assigning designations to celestial bodies and the surface features on them. Founded in 1919, the IAU is the world's largest professional body for astronomers.

The IAU Office for Astronomy Outreach (OAO) is a joint project of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ). The mission of the OAO is to engage the public in astronomy through access to astronomical information and communication of the science of astronomy. This is implemented through a network of IAU National Outreach Coordinators (NOCs) and the IAU’s public engagement initiatives. The work of the OAO is about building bridges between the IAU and the global astronomy community of amateur astronomers, outreach professionals, educators, communicators, and the general public, and through international collaboration, to make the science of astronomy accessible to all.
