Executive Committee WG Women in Astronomy

Description

Back in 2003, at its XXV General Assembly in Sydney (Australia), the IAU recognised and supported the needs and endeavours of women astronomers through the establishment of an Executive Committee (EC) Working Group (WG). Its mandate is to collect information, propose measures, and initiate actions in support of, or to advance equality of opportunity for achievement between women and men in astronomy, in the IAU and in the world at large. It acts as a federation of national Women in Astronomy organisations, creating links and facilitating information exchanges worldwide.

The activities of the Working Group have been so far managed by an Organizing Committee of typically 10-15 persons, whose membership is usually ratified by the IAU Executive Committee at its General Assembly. The OC includes one EC member who acts as the liaison person between the EC and the WG. The OC elects one or two Office Bearers (Chair/Deputy Chair) for three-year terms. The WG reports directly to the EC through the EC liaison person and/or via the IAU General Secretary. The Organising Committee is also responsible for setting-up an interesting programme of events at the IAU General Assemblies (e.g., Women’s Luncheon, Students Mentoring Sessions, Special Talks).

Executive Committee Working Groups undertake essential functions on behalf of the IAU as a whole. It is at the discretion of the EC how long the ECWG continues. Every three years there should be an evaluation of the current Chair as well as the continuation of the WG. A second term could be considered but no longer (6 years max).

Renewed for the Triennium 2024-2027.
