In the context of the global IAU100 celebrations, this video offers a short overview of Astronomy in Tunisia.
Tunisian Astronomy and Astrophysics is taught at a very basic level as a small chapter in physics and geology for young children. There are no university-level studies in this field, but there are various astronomical communities in Tunisia such as TAYA, AJST, an SAT, in addition to the Tunis Science City, Monastir Sciences Palace and various astronomical clubs who organize various events such as. The Night of the Stars, Asteroid Day, Astrophotography Training, Workshops, Symposiums, and more for the science community and the general public. Tunisia does not currently have a professional astronomical observatory for education or research, as an initiative in 1984 to build an observatory was halted due to lack of funding. In June 2018, the Youth and Sciences Association of Tunis - Djerba Club achieved their goal of realizing an astronomical observatory in Houmt Souk-Djerba. The astronomical observatory of Djerba develops outreach activities and will feature a Meade Lx200, 12-inch telescope with GPS (Schmidt-Cassegrain). Tunisia also has a reserved dark sky region in the south.
This video is part of the IAU100 series Under One Sky: Astronomy around the World, which provides a glimpse into the diverse worldwide astronomical community. Each video is presented through the eye sof the IAU National Outreach Coordinators, with every chapter we will learn about the history of astronomy, the country’s current research efforts in space science, and how astronomy is celebrated in this region, with firsthand comments from astronomers and insight into the activities developed during the IAU100 celebrations throughout 2019.
Join us in celebrating an astronomical journey Under One Sky.

In 2019, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) is celebrating its 100th anniversary (IAU100). To commemorate this milestone, the IAU is organising a year-long celebration to increase awareness of a century of astronomical discoveries and technological progress as well as to support and improve the use of astronomy as a tool for education, development and diplomacy under the central theme Under One Sky.
