This video highlights activities conducted by various astronomy institutions and communities in Indonesia. Astronomy in Indonesia has began in ancient times when communities looked to the sky and used it for agriculture and navigation. The Bosscha Observatory was established in 1923 and has since contributed to southern hemisphere astronomy. The National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN) is a government space agency whose responsible to manage research and development on space and aeronautics and its application, as well as organizing space activity. Today there are six observatories and astronomy communities in Indonesia are actively involved in public outreach to disseminate astronomy and other natural sciences.
This video is part of the IAU100 series Under One Sky: Astronomy around the World, which provides a glimpse into the diverse worldwide astronomical community. Each video is presented through the eyes of the IAU National Outreach Coordinators, with every chapter we will learn about the history of astronomy, the country’s current research efforts in space science, and how astronomy is celebrated in this region, with firsthand comments from astronomers and insight into the activities developed during the IAU100 celebrations throughout 2019.
Join us in celebrating an astronomical journey Under One Sky.
