The IAU’s Office of Astronomy for Development (OAD) has released a first of its kind brochure that describes the office’s mission, activities and vision.

Officially opened in 2011, the OAD uses astronomy to make the world a better place. The means through which the office has been working towards this goal is outlined in the colourful brochure which discusses projects implemented in the following three areas: Universities and Research, Children and School and the Public — illustrated with images from each location. Wish list projects — recommended but unfortunately not funded — as well as special projects are also mentioned.

Aimed at a broad audience, the brochure is a comprehensive insight into the OAD and its unique role in facilitating education and capacity building and in furthering sustainable development throughout the world.

The OAD is a joint venture between the IAU and the South African National Research Foundation (NRF) with the support of the Department of Science and Technology (DST). It is hosted at the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) in Cape Town.
