Astronomy for A Better World
Astronomy is an exciting and popular topic because it connects exotic science, cutting edge technology and a sense of cultural connection or inspiration. It can not only help answer the fundamental questions about the origin of humankind and our universe but can play a pivotal role in facilitating education and development. The interdisciplinary scientific and technological skills related to the field of astronomy can be used to further the global development agenda throughout the world.
In 2009, the IAU adopted a decadal Strategic Plan for 2010-20, entitled "Astronomy for Development". This plan resulted from an extensive process of consultation beginning with a meeting of stakeholders in Paris in January 2008 and including feedback from key stakeholders during the various drafts. It was endorsed by the General Assembly of the IAU in Rio de Janeiro in August 2009, and built on the momentum of the very successful International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA).
The objective of this plan was to use astronomy to stimulate development in all regions of the world. The first step in the implementation of this plan was the creation of a global “Office of Astronomy for Development" (OAD).
A new extended IAU Strategic Plan for 2020–2030 was ratified at the XXX IAU General Assembly in 2018 in Austria. It provides a comprehensive overview of the IAU, describing how the different IAU activities fit together and how they complement each other, and presents its long-term goals.
