Obituary:
In 1960 N.S. Komarov graduated from the Department of Mathematics of the Faculty of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at Odessa State University and was hired by the university astronomical observatory, where he worked for 43 years.
In 1968 he defended PhD thesis "Kinematic and Morphological Properties of Stars with Enhanced Metal Lines". In 1989 N.S.Komarov defended ScD thesis ”Structure of the atmospheres of the cool giant stars”, and then he gained the professor title (1996).
He was appointed at the position of the head of Department of astrophysics of the Astronomical Observatory of the Odessa State University. In 1970, N.S.Komarov headed the research sector, and later the Department of astrospectroscopy and Department of the physics of stars and galaxies right here.
Research fields - the determination of the spectral energy distribution, the stellar fundamental parameter study, spectroscopic analysis of stellar atmospheres, determination of the chemical composition and calculations of the synthetic spectra the non-LTE spectral analysis, determination of the metallicity gradient of the galactic disc by calibrations of [Fe/H] – CN for the open clusters, determination of abundances of isotopes and the n-capture elements, investigation of formation of dust grains in the upper atmospheres of giants, etc.
He was a member of a specialized councils on (both ScD and PhD) theses defence on astrophysics and radioastronomy, a member of professional astronomical societies (International Astronomical Union, Europenian Astronomical Society, Euroasian Society), a member of editorial boards of many scientific and popular scientific Journals and magazines. Nikolay Komarov delivered a course of astrospectroscopy to the students of Odessa University, as well he delivered lectures to the participants of International Gamow’s Summer Astronomical School, to auditorium of the former society ”Znanie” and in ”Planetarium”. More than ten PhD theses were prepared under his supervisory, and also due to his initiative. He was also one of the organizers of workshops on spectrophotometric and photometric standards, as well as the international working group “Chemical and Dynamic Evolution of Stars and Galaxies”.
He published about 160 scientific papers and 3 monographs: “Photometric and Spectral Catalog of Bright Stars” (1978), “Spectrophotometry of Stars in the λλ 550-900 nm range” (1983), “Cold Giant Stars” (1999) – (all in Russian).
