Jacqueline A. Bergeron

France

1942-2024

Obituary:

After a thesis in Paris with Evry Schatzmann, Jacqueline worked with Edwin Salpeter at Cornell University (USA), then at Caltech and ESO, before joining the IAP in 1980. A renowned astrophysicist and a prominent player in the life of the institute, she worked in particular on the spectroscopy of quasars and galaxies with active nuclei. She is notably responsible for the discovery of absorbing galaxies on the line of sight of quasars in 1985.

Jacqueline Bergeron has contributed to numerous works on the properties of circumgalactic and intergalactic media, on high-redshift quasar surveys, and on the properties of quasars and their host galaxies. Very closely involved in the use of large astronomical instruments to observe the distant Universe, she has held important responsibilities in several key ESO and HST programmes; she spent several years at ESO Headquarters in Geneva and was Director of Science at ESO-Munich in the 1990s, as well as Secretary General of the IAU from 1991 to 1994.

Finally, by participating in numerous committees for the allocation of observation time, credits, and for the evaluation of laboratories or institutes, she has constantly rendered immense services to the astrophysics community. The IAP will very soon devote its "front page" to her to recall her career and the science we owe to her.
