December 2018

Dear friends and colleagues,

And so it begins. The much-awaited IAU centenary celebrations will start soon with nearly 700 events in over 70 countries reported and registered on our platform so far. The IAU100 Secretariat, the Office for Astronomy Outreach (OAO) and the IAU Secretariat are actively engaged in preparing for an exciting year ahead. We want to share that excitement with you — a century of fantastic science, technological progress and inspiration.

Our IAU and IAU100 programs are tailored to the communities we have proudly been serving for the past one hundred years. Within our regular IAU activities there will be 9 IAU Symposia in 2019, including the first IAU symposium on equality, diversity and inclusion. In 2019 the IAU will also contribute to the training of the next generation of astronomers through the International School for Young Astronomers run by the Office for Young Astronomers, while astronomy for development is stimulated by a dozen projects endorsed by the Office for Astronomy for Development. For IAU100 specifically, the celebrations at a national and local level will be supported by more than 100 IAU100 national committees established through the OAO. Examples of upcoming global projects are listed below. We encourage all members of our community to participate in and/or organise and register events under the IAU100 banner.

The year will start with a world-wide kick-off event — the 100 Hours of Astronomy, running from 10 to 13 January 2019 and with nearly 200 events registered in over forty different countries. Everyone around the globe can participate in this joint effort to bring astronomy to the public.

Also, the International Astronomical Union 1919–2019: 100 Years Under One Sky Flagship event will be held on 11–12 April 2019 at the Palace of the Academies in Brussels, Belgium. The event will include the participation of the Nobel Prize Laureate Brian Schmidt and astronauts John Grunsfeld and Chiaki Mukai as keynote speakers. Participation in this event is primarily by invitation; however, in January 2019 there will be information about the possibility for others to attend as well: stay tuned for more information.

The IAU centennial celebrations are made possible thanks to a wide variety of partners. We welcome new organisations coming on board to support the IAU100 goals. You can review the various possibilities here .

Please see the IAU100 website and follow us on our Twitter and Facebook pages to stay up to date with the latest news, and use hashtag #IAU100 for anything related to the celebrations. For any enquiries, please contact the IAU100 Coordinator Jorge Rivero González at rivero@strw.leidenuniv.nl.

We strongly encourage everyone to join and participate in this diverse selection of initiatives which will bring the international astronomy community together united “Under One Sky”.

Seasonal greetings, and our very best wishes for 2019!

Ewine van Dishoeck
IAU President

Teresa Lago
