Dear IAU members,
This newsletter is issued less than four weeks ahead of the opening of the XXX General Assembly (GA) in Vienna and as you can imagine, the Local Organizing Committee and the IAU Office are getting busier. We are, however, also thrilled that the approaching GA will be one of the richest in terms of number of participants and events.
Many of the events closely related to the IAU Community have been described in recent newsletters, but I wish to bring your attention to some interesting collateral happenings that are offered to the public in general. These are also described in our recent press release.
The first event I’d like to highlight is a special exhibit about the last one hundred years of astronomical progress, that will be inaugurated at the GA to celebrate one hundred year anniversary of the IAU. This exhibit is designed to be transported to various locations over the next year, starting with the opening of the anniversary celebrations in Brussels (11–12 April, 2019). The second event is the Inspiring Stars travelling exhibition, described in a recent announcement. This exhibition will be a showcase of successful examples of using astronomy for actively including everybody in science, overcoming physical or sociological barriers.
Back to IAU business, the results of the election for the renewal of the Organizing Committees of Divisions and Commissions have been recently published (https://www.iau.org/news/announcements/detail/ann18031/) and new members will be formally approved and presented during the GA Business Sessions.
The Executive Committee will meet the day before the opening of the GA (Sunday, 19 August 2018) for the first session of its 101 Meeting. The second session (Saturday, 25 August 2018) will be completely dedicated to the selection of the venue for the XXXII General Assembly in 2024: the four candidates will be presented during the I Business Session of the GA, and the selected proposal will be announced as the last point in the agenda of the II Business Session.
Finally, the Opening, Closing and mid-GA IAU 100 year anniversary celebrations, will be enriched by special musical events (not surprisingly, being in Vienna). In particular, the one prepared for the closing, will be a pleasant and inclusive surprise for all participants: be ready!
