Dear IAU members,
This Newsletter opens with a great news: our President elect, Ewine van Dishoeck, has been awarded with the prestigious Kavli Prize 2018!
On behalf of the Executive Committee and of the entire Union, I wish to congratulate Ewine for this well deserved international recognition of her exceptional contribution to Astrophysics. It is very significant that in the triennium that includes the Celebration of the 100th anniversary from its foundation, the IAU is presided by a Kavli laureate. Indeed, the Kavli award ceremony will take place in Oslo on September 4th, just few days after the IAU General Assembly in Vienna during which Ewine will be formally appointed IAU President.
On a more routine matter, I like to raise your attention to the announcement of a Global Survey of Mathematical, Computing and Natural Scientists. The Survey is part of the Project “A Global Approach to the Gender Gap in Mathematical and Natural Sciences: How to Measure It, How to Reduce It?” supported by ICSU and of which IAU is a partner. The responses to the Survey are voluntary and will be held in strict confidence. The participation by a very large number of scientists worldwide is essential for the success of the project, therefore you are all invited to participate and to spread the information to your peers. More information about the Project and the Survey can be found at this link.
On IAU business matters, the elections concerning the governing bodies of Divisions and Commissions are almost completed and the results will be announced momentarily together with additional important news: stay tuned on the IAU pages!
