Computer simulation of colliding black holes

Computer simulations have been used to understand what would happen when two black holes merge. Gravitational waves are predicted to emerge from the encounter by Einstein’s general theory of relativity. With the detection of gravitational waves, most likely from just such an event, by the LIGO instruments, gravitational waves have passed from the realm of theory into that of observed reality.
