International Astronomical Union Publishes New Communication Policy

The International Astronomical Union (IAU) has published a Communication Policy detailing its rules regarding both internal and external communication. This policy applies to all IAU Members (Individual, Junior, Honorary Members and Associates), Officers, and Staff at the IAU Offices, all of whom are encouraged to read and familiarise themselves with it.

The document sets out rules that should be followed in interactions with both traditional and social media, as well as for internal communications between Commissions, Divisions and Working Groups. Among other aspects of communication, these rules clarify who may claim to represent the IAU, and procedures for responding to inquiries that may involve the IAU. The document also offers guidance on best practices in science communication and reminds readers of the new IAU Code of Conduct, which was published earlier this year and should be followed in all IAU activities, including communication.

In today’s interconnected world, in which much information is publicly accessible and news travels quickly, statements can be misinterpreted or taken out of context, leading to disproportionate and unintended consequences. The new IAU Communication Policy seeks to avoid such situations involving the IAU and its staff and members, while continuing to facilitate open discussion on scientific matters.
