Obituary Information

Patrick Gaulme, staff scientist at Thüringer Landessternwarte Tautenburg, died on July 14 of pancreatic cancer. He would have been 47 on July 22. He first worked on Jovian seismology, during his PhD under the supervision Benoît Mosser at the Paris Observatory (2022-2025). Then he participed in the development of the ground-based spectro-imager SYMPA, with François-Xavier Schmider (Lagrange, OCA), and played a keyrole in the analysis of seismic Jovian observations. He joined the Institut d'Astrophysique Spatiale (Orsay), for the implementation of a spectro-imager aboard the ESA-NASA Juice mission, with Thierry Appourchaux.  He then enlarged his research to asteroseismology with Jason Jackiewicz at NMSU in Las Cruces, and observed red giant stars in binary systems at the Apache Point Observatory.  With extensive expertise in the analysis of Kepler, he was hired by Laurent Gizon at MPIA (Göttingen), in the PLATO data center, and got since June 2023 a tenure track at the Thüringer Landessternwarte - Karl Schwarzschild Observatory.

Patrick is recognized as an expert in binary system asteroseismology. His successes in asteroseismology resonate with some of his personal interests: bringing a unique perspective to the world through film photography, revealing the essential through sound and music, and exploring the interiors of Paris in the catacombs. Our thoughts go out to Paola, his wife, and his four children.
